Last night, like most Sundays, I watched the program 60 Minutes.
Often, this post-covid, inflation-gauging, war-inhabited world, disappoints me; however, 60 Minutes never does.
Amazingly, this program knows how to affirm what I know and think about the world, and, in addition, it always enlightens me with new information - both at the same time.
Usually, there are three segments, but I am just writing about two of the segments, today.
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty lead the way with an informative review of the stellar reporting RFE/RL does for our world. The segment reminded us that the US Congress funds this organization and is the only way some countries get fact-based reporting from honest journalists. (Sometimes the journalist dies or is imprisoned for honest reporting, but that is another blog post.)
The second segment told us about an amazing, enterprising millionaire - not a billionaire - named Gregg Carr who invented voice mail and now rehabilitates an African national park in war-torn Mozambique restoring wildlife to their natural habitat and educating the people who run and support the park.
I was watching the show with a friend of mine and he said, “What if more millionaires did projects like that with their money?
Exactly! And I will take it a step further, what if billionaires did more projects like this?
“81 billionaires have more wealth than 50% of the world combined. Despite this, they are taxed the least, with only 4 cents in every dollar of global tax revenue coming from wealth taxes. In fact, half of the world’s billionaires live in regions where wealth tax is not even a thing.”
According to Forbes, the U.S. claims 724 billionaires - the most in the world. China comes in second with 698.
Why do so many people try to immigrate to the United States each year?
Here is what I think:
People listen to Radio Free Europe and learn the truth about the world and they decide they want to be free.
The United States of America is the best free country in the world.
We have 724 billionaires.
And, we have 60 Minutes every Sunday evening.*
* Of course, you can stream it at any time, but I like watching it on Sunday evening.
