Last Friday, I substituted at my old high school - St. Thomas Aquinas. The teacher I was subbing for asked the students to write a short paper and do a bit of research.
While walking around observing the class, I noticed one student using the website QUILL. (I’m not sure he got the irony of the title but I did - very clever.)
The student explained to me that QUILL was a chatbot that rewrites or paraphrases research into new words so he would not be caught plagiarizing.
This morning, I stumbled upon an article in The New York Times about the "Godfather of A.I." and how he recently resigned from Google because he thinks the world is coming to an end because of chatbots.
I’ve been thinking about the chatbot situation for some time and I have been thinking that I need to write a blog about Chat GPT, Bard, Jasper, Bingchat etc. so I would spend some time learning about how it works and develop my own opinion about chatbots and A.I. and how it is affecting teenagers and their writing skills. So instead, I did a little experiment.
Here goes.
Here are "my" thoughts about teenagers and writing.
Teenagers need writing abilities to succeed in school and in life. To express their thoughts, learn new knowledge, and finish projects, they must be able to write clearly.
Teenagers can undertake a variety of things to enhance their writing abilities. Here are some pointers:
Read a lot. You will be exposed to a variety of writing styles and strategies the more you read. You'll be able to write more effectively and with better grammar, spelling, and punctuation as a result of this.
Publish frequently. Your writing will improve as you write more. Even for a little while each day, set aside time to write.
Get opinions. Ask your parents, friends, or family members to read your writing.
What do you think?
So this is how I generated the above section of wonderful writing.
First, I went to BARD - the Google Chatbot - and I put in the topic "teenagers and writing skills".
Second, I went into QUILL and pasted what Bard had to say.
Amazingly, the bots knew my exact thoughts; however, the bots did not know that I never write the word a lot.
Did I form a conclusion after all of this research, writing, time, and effort this morning?
I am still thinking about it.
Well, you put a lot of effort into “your” essay!
